Laptop Speakers Not Working? Try These Quick Fixes!

How to Fix Laptop Speakers That Are Not Producing Sound

Are your laptop speakers silent even though the volume is up? This issue can be caused by muted audio settings, outdated sound drivers, or hardware problems. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fix your laptop’s sound quickly.

1. Check Basic Sound Settings

Before troubleshooting deeper, verify the basic settings.

Windows:

  1. Click the sound icon in the taskbar and ensure the volume is up.
  2. Right-click the sound icon, select Open Sound Settings, and check the Output Device.

Mac:

  1. Click the Apple menu > System Settings > Sound.
  2. Ensure the output device is set to Internal Speakers and the volume is up.

🛑 If your speakers still don’t work, continue with the next steps.

2. Restart Your Laptop

A simple restart can resolve software-related audio glitches.

✔ Restart your laptop and check if the speakers start working.

3. Update or Reinstall Audio Drivers (Windows Only)

Faulty or outdated drivers can stop sound output.

✔ Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
✔ Expand Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
✔ Right-click your audio driver and select Update Driver.
✔ If updating doesn’t work, select Uninstall Device, then restart your laptop.

🛑 Windows will automatically reinstall the driver upon reboot.

4. Run the Audio Troubleshooter (Windows Only)

Windows has a built-in tool to diagnose sound problems.

✔ Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
✔ Click Playing Audio > Run the Troubleshooter.
✔ Follow the prompts to detect and fix the issue.

5. Disable Audio Enhancements (Windows Only)

Some audio enhancements can interfere with sound output.

✔ Go to Control Panel > Sound.
✔ Select your speakers, click Properties, then go to Enhancements.
✔ Check Disable all enhancements and click Apply.

6. Check for External Device Conflicts

✔ Unplug any headphones or external speakers—they may be overriding the laptop’s speakers.
✔ If using Bluetooth speakers, disconnect and check if the internal speakers work.

7. Reset PRAM and SMC (Mac Only)

If Mac speakers stop working, resetting PRAM and SMC can help.

Reset PRAM: Restart your Mac and hold Option + Command + P + R until you hear a chime.
Reset SMC: Turn off the Mac, hold Shift + Control + Option + Power Button for 10 seconds, then turn it back on.

8. Check for Hardware Damage

If none of the above steps work, your laptop’s speakers may be damaged.

Test with an external speaker or headphones.
✔ If external sound works, the built-in speakers may need repair or replacement.

Final Thoughts

If your laptop speakers aren’t working, the issue is usually software-related and fixable with simple settings adjustments or driver updates. If the speakers are damaged, professional repair may be required.
